Mind the Gap: Design for In-Between Spaces in Detroit

What would you design to "fill in" the empty, gap-toothed spaces in your city's urban fabric, like alleys, bridges, overpasses, sidewalks, storefronts, surface parking lots and vacant lots?

"Mind the Gap" is accepting ideas for its new competition, open to the public. Submissions will be reviewed by a jury, and a $100 cash prize will be awarded to the best idea. A selection of ideas will be displayed and published during Detroit Design Festival on September 21-28, 2011.

Anyone can submit an idea by Monday, September 12, 2011, 5:00 p.m. Ideas will be exhibited at an event at the Bureau of Urban Living and City Bird in Detroit.

Your submission need not be a full-fledged plan -- just a short description will do. The point of this project is to generate ideas for inspiration and discussion.

Photographs, sketches & renderings are encouraged, but not required. Show us what you're seeing and imagining. Email up to three (3) images per submission (jpg format, please) to info@bureauliving.com. Please put "Mind the Gap" in the subject line and make sure to include your name and any image credits. We will pair your images with your description submitted below.

Here are some cool example ideas to spark your creativity:

  • Interactive murals
  • Green alleys
  • Food cart courts
  • Street art galleries
