The perfection of sweet treats, the satisfaction of aggression, and the transformative power of art for social change. What a combo.
L.A.-based artist Mar Cuervo explores these themes in her new work, "Destroyer," showing her bare hands smashing desserts, like flan and cupcakes, in a series of mesmerizing .gifs. The visual performance art is meant to combat our obsession with perfection, as represented by the ceremonious crushing of immaculate desserts, and our stigma against anger, which the artist says is actually a very productive emotion.
From an interview with LA Weekly:
"Anger is usually silenced and avoided as an ostracized and negative feeling, but it is probably the strongest feeling we have and the one that makes us change things. Destroying these gentle objects is a ceremony where I funnel my inner outrage and dissatisfaction against the elements that create them in the first place."
"Anger is the feeling that has set in motion the most beautiful changes in this society. Every single civil rights movement has come from anger. Anger changes things, creates things, is transformative. People who want to keep the status quo fear it, of course they do! People who believe in something better for this society get angry."
So there you go. Unleash your fury on some annoyingly perfect pies. The world will be better for it.
